The Experience
You’re standing at the very origin point of American dude ranching, whether or not anyone mentions it outright. In 1879, three Eaton brothers started letting paying guests join their cattle operation near Medora, North Dakota, and by 1904 the family had moved the whole enterprise to this spot on Wolf Creek, chasing better riding terrain for a growing crowd of Easterners who couldn’t get enough. Eaton’s Ranch has been continuously operated by the Eaton family since 1879, now in the hands of the fourth and fifth generations. Still known locally by its founding story — the ranch that essentially invented the concept of paying to experience the cowboy life — Eaton’s has spent more than 140 years refining an offering that other dude ranches still measure themselves against.
The ranch’s setting is milder than much of Wyoming’s high country, sitting at just 4,500 feet, which makes for comfortable riding weather through its June-to-September season and a quieter winter bed-and-breakfast operation from January through April. Fifty-one individual cabins, each with its own character, spread across the property, and the common house — books, board games, old photographs, a deck to catch the afternoon sun — anchors the ranch’s more relaxed hours.
USA Today’s 2025 recognition as America’s number-one dude ranch, edging out exclusive competitors like Wyoming’s own Brush Creek Ranch, only confirmed what generations of returning guests already knew. Our Stewardship
Eaton’s Ranch holds a special use permit with the Bighorn National Forest, which governs its overnight pack trips and all-day rides into the forest. This federal permitting relationship has been maintained for decades, tying the ranch’s riding programme to responsible, regulated use of protected public land.
