Horsemanship here runs deeper than most dude ranches attempt — the Wirths teach Parelli Natural Horsemanship, an approach built on understanding equine psychology rather than simply directing a horse down a trail, and every guest, from complete beginner to advanced rider, has the chance to genuinely improve their skills over the course of a stay. With riding rights across a neighbouring 85,000-acre ranch and six different mountain ranges visible from the higher trails, there’s no shortage of country to put that horsemanship to use in.
The Experience
Your days revolve around the ranch’s roughly sixty horses — Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Paints, Mustangs, a couple of gentle Belgians and ponies — and you’re encouraged to groom and saddle your own mount, building a connection that goes well beyond simply climbing on. Rides range from flat, easy trails to steeper mountain climbs, the terrain opening at its highest points onto views across six different Montana mountain ranges. If you’re up for it, the sixteen-mile ride to Medicine Rock offers long stretches of open ground built for cantering.
Most weeks give you the chance to move cattle from one pasture to another or bring them into the arena for team penning — genuine ranch work, not a photo opportunity. You’ll pick up Parelli Natural Horsemanship alongside traditional Western reining technique, and if you’re bringing children, they’re riding and playing real mounted games from age six up, sometimes joining the adult rides once they’re ready.
Beyond the saddle, blue-ribbon fly fishing on the ranch and the nearby Missouri River, archery, and skeet shooting fill your afternoons, while evenings settle into ranch-style, family dining with genuine warmth. Two of the couple’s six children now help manage much of the ranch, including daughter Anna, who oversees the horse programme and horse-guest pairing with a background that includes a Master’s degree in medieval farriery from Durham University — an unusually academic pedigree for a working Montana wrangler, and one that shows in the care taken over every guest’s mount. The ranch raises Corriente cattle for roping and horse training, and Patty’s own horsemanship, learned from her father and from noted trainer Monte Foreman, still shapes how the Wirths teach today.
