Vista Verde Ranch sits thirty minutes north of Steamboat Springs in the Elk River Valley, on land homesteaded in 1911 and named, by legend, when a Spanish teacher looked out over freshly irrigated hay fields and exclaimed “Vista Verde” — green view. Nearly a century and several ownership eras later, the ranch has become one of Colorado’s most consistently celebrated luxury guest ranches, prized as much for its close-knit “front porch community” atmosphere as for its 4-star accommodations and genuinely excellent cuisine.
Set at 7,800 feet against the Mount Zirkel Wilderness and Routt National Forest, Vista Verde operates year-round, with summer riding, biking, and fly-fishing giving way to a full winter programme once the snow arrives. Current owners Jerry and Peggy Throgmartin, who took over in 2006, have invested heavily in the property — a new indoor riding arena, an expanded Great Room, a swimming pool — while keeping the ranch’s original character, and its deep sense of hospitality, fully intact.

The Experience
Your riding here moves at the pace of genuine connection rather than a fixed itinerary — you’re matched with a horse for your stay, and by the second or third morning, you’ll likely notice the particular ease of a partnership that’s properly settled in. Trails wind through the Routt National Forest and toward the Mount Zirkel Wilderness, with terrain varied enough for a relaxed scenic ride one day and something more demanding the next.
What you’ll notice most, though, is the community that forms almost immediately — strangers turning into friends over shared meals in the Main Lodge, evenings that might include barn dancing, live music, or simply a fire and good conversation. Beyond the saddle, fly fishing, mountain biking, archery, and paddle-boarding fill your days, with a full winter programme waiting if you come back when the snow arrives.
Dinner is a genuine highlight of its own, overseen by a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef and served family-style beside a roaring fireplace, the wine list rotating to match the menu. Between the horses, the landscape, and the warmth the ranch is known for, you may find, like so many guests before you, that a week here starts to feel less like a vacation and more like coming home to a place that happens to have spectacular mountains attached.

About Vista Verde
Vista Verde’s story begins with the Homestead Act of 1862: in 1911, Loren Blair and John Hay staked their claim to the land, building a small home where the ranch’s Parlor now stands. The Tufly family purchased the property in 1933, farming hay and grazing cattle until the opening of the Steamboat Springs ski area in 1968 revealed an opportunity for tourism — the ranch’s first hunting, fishing, and horseback pack trips date to this period. Ownership passed through the Brophy family in 1975 before the Throgmartins, pursuing a long-held dream of ranch ownership, took the reins in 2006.
That dream has translated into serious investment without sacrificing the ranch’s essential character — a new indoor arena, a remodeled Lodge with an expanded Great Room, refurbished cabins throughout the property, and a genuine commitment to staff development and sustainability that runs through every level of the operation. The result is a four-star guest ranch experience that still feels, unmistakably, like a working relationship with the land rather than a manufactured luxury product.
What sets Vista Verde apart within Colorado’s crowded guest ranch landscape is precisely this balance — polish and genuine warmth in equal measure, a location remote enough to feel like a true escape yet close enough to Steamboat Springs for easy access, and more than a century of layered history that guests can feel the moment they turn up the ranch’s long dirt driveway.
